Division of Arts and Humanities Computer Use Policies
The computer equipment and labs maintained by the Division of Arts and Humanities are for use by its Faculty, Staff, Graduate, and Undergraduate Students. Individuals are granted access to the labs and technology resources during quarters in which they are affiliated with the Division. While we make every effort to maintain the integrity of our servers and data, YOU are ultimately responsible for backing up and recovering your data in the event of a total systems failure. Access to the computer labs is a privilege and can be revoked at any time for any violation of the rules below. Questions about this policy should be directed to Arts and Humanities Information Technology (614-688-4447).
Please read the following guidelines:
- No food or drinks are allowed in any lab at any time. Violations of this rule will result in a loss of access to your account and all division computer systems..
- Accounts and passwords may not, under any circumstances, be shared with, or used by, persons other than those to whom they have been assigned by the division or university.
- Do not save, e-mail, print, or otherwise transmit restricted personal information for yourself or others on any University or personal computer. Please see the University Computer Security Standards at http://buckeyesecure.osu.edu/ for more detailed information.
- Do not unplug anything from the back of any computers unless you plugged it in yourself. Some labs have various firewire and USB cables available for your use. Please see the lab monitor in the lab or the Division of Arts and Humanities help desk for more information.
- Wireless network access is available in all labs and division buildings. Please contact the University IT support group at (614) 688-4357, 8-HELP, if you would like to use it with your laptop. Account activation and instructions are also available online at: http://wireless.osu.edu.
- Please throw all trash away in the trash cans - do not leave it on the desks. As a courtesy to other students, please push in your chair when you leave.
- Every user has at least 2 GB of storage on our servers (your home area; 1 GB for guests). This includes your desktop, documents folder, and your entire profile. It is a secure space that can only be accessed by you and our server administrators.
- Every machine in the lab has a local hard drive designated as the "scratch" disk. This is for you to use when you are working on large projects or when doing video work. This disk is not a secure area to store data. The scratch disk is accessible to anyone who logs into the computer and your files may be deleted without your knowledge or consent. We highly recommend that you purchase an external hard drive to store large files on if you want to ensure they are not deleted.
- If you completely fill your home area on the server, you will not be able to save any new files until you delete some items. You may also experience program crashes and other problems. Contact the division technical support staff at ahtech@osu.edu or 688-4447 to check your disk quota or request an increase.
- Black and/or color laser printers are available for use in most of the labs. If there is a printer in the lab it will appear in the printer list on each of the machines. Do Not select a printer other than what appears in the list as your document will print somewhere else in the building.
- Printing is available in Hopkins Hall 346, the ETS lab. While access to the computers in the lab is restricted, you can print to the printer from any of our computer labs. Printing costs $0.10/page for monochrome (black) prints and $0.50/page for color. Visit http://www.buckid.com to deposit money to your ID to print. Please do not use any photo paper or transparencies in our printers. They will damage them and you will be responsible for any repair costs. If you have any questions about paper types, please ask a lab monitor or the Technology Office.
- If you have any questions about using any of the software or hardware in a lab, please ask a lab monitor.
- If you have any problems with software or the equipment, please tell a lab monitor or report it to the tech office. This is the only way that we will know that something needs to be fixed. Faculty and Graduate Students can also submit a ticket via our online Help Desk.
- All applicable University IT Policies that have not been addressed heretofore apply: Office of the CIO: Responsible Use Policy.
